Better Together – Working Out With A Friend

by Mal – Thursday, 2. August 2018

Sometimes inspiration comes from watching ordinary people do extraordinary things. Thus ‘the more the merrier’ is our motto for working out. Exercising with a friend is not only more fun, but the benefits are endless. Research shows that it’s one of the best ways to keep you accountable, work harder, and even torch more calories. So the next time you feel your motivation waning, you might consider recruiting a friend to be your pedaling pal. Keep reading to find out exactly how you’ll both be better for it – here are 5 reasons why working out with your BFF takes quality time to the next level.

You’ll be more accountable

It’s so much harder to hit snooze and blow off that 6am class when you know a friend is meeting you there. Having a workout buddy counting on you gives you more incentive to get up and show up.

You’ll work harder

You know how when you’re slogging through a tough workout, the moment someone looks your way you step up your game? That’s called “social facilitation.” People tend to increase their effort when others are watching. So, watch each other’s backs like you always do, and push each other to push a little harder.

You’ll stay motivated

Burnout is real. But working out with a pal can help you avoid boredom and stay engaged. Embrace a little friendly competition on the VeloBoard as you strive to meet new goals. Support each other’s progress (did you know that you earn free classes when you hit 50, 100 and 200 rides?). Then toast each other’s successes over post-workout juices or low-sugar cocktails.

You’ll be more likely to try new things

Doing something outside your comfort zone is a lot easier when you bring backup. So, go ahead and sign up for that other class (if you always do Velobeat, why not try Veloburn?) knowing that you’ll have someone to celebrate (or commiserate) with after you’ve made it through.

Recovery time means catch up time

Friends can make almost any situation more fun – even super challenging workouts. Something to look forward to while working out with a buddy is the fun you’ll have together in class and the time you get afterwards to catch up. Use the buddy system as a time to connect with a friend, try a new class, and reward yourself afterwards – if it’s on a weekend why not go for a fun brunch afterwards? So, grab a friend, get moving and enjoy yourself!
